USED IN THE DIAGNIOSIS OF CONDITIONS SUCH AS:
-Abdominal pain or distention
-Abnormal liver function
-Enlarged abdominal organs
-Gallbladder
-kidney stones
-Aortic aneurysms
-Obstruction in blood vessels
-Narrowing blood vessels
PREPARATION
Please arrive a few minutes before your actual appointment so that you can complete a consent form.Ensure that clothing worn is easy to remove (preferably a pants / skirt and top). You may be asked to change into a gown for the ultrasound examination. You will be asked to lie down on a bed and to expose the area that is to be examined. Paper towel is usually put around the area of interest to protect the clothing.A water based gel is spread over the area to be examined so as to allow better contact between the transducer (probe) and the skin thus improving the produced image. You will be asked to stop eating at 22h00 the night before the examination and remain Nil per mouth the morning of the examination. For a study of the kidneys and bladder you may be asked to drink a few glasses of water about one hour prior to the examination to fill the bladder. The produced images can be viewed on a flat screen monitor by the patient and their family. Images are stored on a CD which is given to the patient after completion of the scan.

Sound waves, which are reflected, are used to produces images of the organs and other structures in the upper abdomen.A Doppler ultrasound study, which is a technique used to evaluate the blood flow through a blood vessel, may form part of an abdominal ultrasound.
